Understanding Video Game Preservation: GTA 5

This article is an exhibition of one of GTA 5’s longest anticipated additions to the game and represents our commitment to the video game community. As GTA 5 approaches the end of its product lifecycle, we wanted to highlight a meaningful update that supports the long-term community engagement GTA 5 has received, especially as Rockstar Games shifts their focus toward GTA 6.

The Mile High Club has existed for years as a community within the GTA community. The tower forever under construction is a symbol of unfinished potential. We reimagined this unused space as a tribute to veteran players, transforming it into a fully realised in-game location providing a means to showcase the effort committed by players since… 2013! The result is both a nod to the community and a viable means for Rockstar to leave the community in a good place before their next title consumes their player base.

Providing a Legacy Space of Preservation

Our goal was to provide the product with a dedicated legacy space, allowing users to showcase achievements accumulated since GTA Online launched. With many users having invested over a decade into the game, the Mile High Club is a symbolic endgame hub. Here, users can display lifetime stats, milestones, accumulated in-game wealth and assets to compare against other users in a way that feels personal and rewarding. The function of this update relies on the existing systems of past updates’ content. It's not uncommon to see past GTA content rendered redundant as new content is released, so it forces users to revisit other areas and realise the depth of the game by giving new extents to existing reward systems.

The in-game data system is powered by a satirical interface parodying corporate data surveillance and the recent privacy concerns surrounding it. While basic user stats have always been accessible through GTA Online’s menus, this information has largely been missed or lacks purpose due to limited UX design. This redesign innovates on the UX as it serves a dual purpose of adding new content and incentives to progress in the game, but also to reflect and give tangibility to past accomplishments. Thus far, the GTA Online ecosystem has been only forward-looking, but as the game reaches the end of its lifecycle, these changes flip the perspective.

The added content provides more sentiment than tangible player rewards as they act as mementoes more than expendable in-game cash or vehicles. Given that players have never seen the opportunity to showcase their efforts like such, it will be a new experience, but one that feels like satisfying closure.

Comments

The Mile High Club update is a purposeful homage to the millions who’ve spent over a decade building criminal empires in Los Santos. By turning one of the game’s longest-standing mysteries into a stat-driven, player-celebrating landmark, our concept acknowledges the legacy of GTA Online’s dedicated fanbase. Using satirical UI design and parody-driven commentary throughout the article, it cleverly recontextualises gameplay history as something worth preserving. In doing so, it memorialises it. As the franchise inevitably shifts toward new horizons, the Mile High Club stands as a final gesture, a space for reflection, absurdity, and celebration. For once, the unfinished is finished, and maybe endearing the community is the most fitting way to end a game of chaos.

Visually and tonally, the article reflects the usual Rockstar satirical style, using parody to mock our real-world absurdities. The content is designed to match the content found on their existing newswires. The first three images are credited to the modders of the GTA community, and the remainder of the images are credited to Rockstar themselves.
